Portrait of Grandfather

In this portrait, my grandfather sits at his desk with the four books he wrote, surrounded by images of his first wife and their child, my mother. My grandfather was a Southern author and gentleman farmer who was an outspoken voice for civil rights when many of his peers were not. He spoke with courage and used his storytelling gift to get across his ideas in a lighter and humorous tone. In this painting, he sits framed by the live oak tree that grew outside his study, and his favorite chair where he sat to think, ponder the world, and tell stories to anyone.
